My life outside A BIT of I.T.

Unlike some small business IT consultants, I have a life outside of IT and technology in general.

Thomas H Huxley (1825-1895) defined my outlook on life far more succinctly than I would have when he said “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” I still am not sure which something I should try to know everything about.

I grew up in country Victoria near a small town near the Grampians National Park. My dad built (and never finished) the mud brick house we lived in. We had our own power supply and water supply and an orchard in the middle of the bush.

I am married with two kids who are great fun.

I live in suburban Melbourne and try to grow as many vegetables and fruits as I can in the back yard. I am still renovating our house, renovations are never really done but it is getting to a point where I can stop for a while. The next major project is a traditional wood fired oven.

I have a long term and largely unfinished project car that I have been building from scratch that I would love to get into again to get finished and on the road.

I grow orchids, mostly Cymbidiums and Australian native Dendrobiums. I also enjoy propagating Eucalypts from seeds I collect from parks, golf courses and nature strips. These mostly get planted at my mother’s farm in the Strathbogie Ranges.

I ride a bicycle whenever I can, a few days per week, weather permitting.

I am a beer snob. Life is too short to drink bad beer.

I am a coffee snob. Life is too short to drink bad coffee.
